What is an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?

The eTA or Electronic Travel Authorization is a new measure taken by the Canadian government in terms of entry requirements in the territory. Similar to the US ESTA, it will require passengers traveling to Canada by air or through transit to fill an online form in advance. The eTA is not a VISA neither visible nor palpable but linked to your passport; it creates a better control of air migration flows and to identify possible risk to travelers in advance.

How to apply for an eTA?

The eTA system is only available on the internet. Before you begin the procedure, make sure you have a valid passport, a credit card and an email address.
Then go on an eTA application website to make your request there, follow the recommendations and complete the forms. If all goes well, you should get a response from CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) within one hour. However sometimes the procedure is longer, if you have not received after 72 hours, resume contact on the platform.

Studying in Canada

Study and work permit holders from visa-exempt countries who received their permit on or before July 31, 2015 need an eTA to fly or transit to Canada. Note: The leniency period that allows travelers to board their flight without an eTA ends soon. Applicants who are issued an initial study or work permit on or after August 1, 2015 will automatically be issued an eTA along with their permit. For work permit or study permit renewal applications, the eTA will not be automatically renewed. If you wish to exit and re-enter Canada by air, you will need to ensure that your eTA is still valid by consulting the ‘Check Status Tool’. If your eTA has expired, you will need to apply for a new one as soon as you can and before the eTA leniency period ends.

eTA Validity

Your eTA is valid for a period of five years, with which you can reside in Canada for up to six months. After that time, you will need to request for an extension of stay.
If you have a US citizenship, the eTA is not mandatory to enter the Canadian territory. Attention! An eTA does not necessarily means an entry in Canada. The final decision is always in the hands of the immigration officer at the border post.

Helpful hints

To avoid unpleasant surprises, remember to apply for an eTA before taking your airline tickets to Canada. It would be too bad after booking your flight to Montreal and finally learn that you are not eligible to fly to the country. However, you can submit your application at least 72 hours before departure.
